The Sikhs:Sikhs are people associated with Sikhism, a monotheistic religion that originated in the 15th century in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent, based on the revelation of Guru Nanak.
The Guru Nanak Dev Ji was the founder of Sikhism in the beginning of the 16th century .He was its First guru .The Fifth guru,Arjan Dev, complied the teachings of the earlier gurus into what came to be called the Guru Granth Sahib. He also built the Harmandir Sahib ( or the Golden Temple) at Amritsar.
Emperor Jahangir was enraged with Arjan Dev ji for helping Shah Jahan rebel against him and had him put to death. This act of Jahangir's angered the Sikhs, who took this an attack on their religion by the Mughals .The Ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Teg Bahadur (1664-1675CE) was also put to death by the Mughals- this time by Aurangzeb. In response to this act, his son and the last Sikh guru ,Guru Gobind Singh (1675-1708 CE) transformed the Sikhs into a militant sect, the khalsa , in 1699CE.
The organization of the Sikhs into a political community during the seventeenth century helped in regional state- building in the Punjab. Several battles were fought by Guru Gobind Singh against the Rajput and Mughal rulers, both before and after the institution of the Khalsa in 1699. After his death in 1708, the Khalsa rose in revolt against the Mughal authority under Banda Bahadur’s leadership, declared their sovereign rule by striking coins in the name of Guru Nanak and Guru Gobind Singh, and established their own administration between the Sutlej and the Jamuna. Banda Bahadur was captured in 1715 and executed in 1716.
Maharaja Ranjit Singh (called “The Lion of the Punjab”) (1780-1839) was a Sikh ruler of the Punjab. His tomb is located in Lahore, Pakistan. He established a strong Kingdom in Punjab .He also conquered Kashmir,Peshawar and Multan.
His army was the second best after the British in Asia.He employed Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs in his own guidance.
In the eighteenth century, the Sikhs organized themselves into a number of bands called jathas, and later misls. Their combined forces were known as the grand army (Dal Khalsa).
